Andy and I became friends during our junior high days at SBJH. He and John Verner and I shared a ride to the 8th grade dance (it was not the kind of dance where you took a “date”). We wore suits and those skinny ties that were fashionable in those days. I’ve lost the photo my mom took of us, unfortunately. Anyway, Andy, que descances en paz.

I'm not suprised that Andy grew up to be a Master Teacher. He was always one of the most insightful and articulate young men in our class. My fondest memory of him was the night he emceed the Beauty and Brawn pageant. Andy was so entertaining and classy in his tux. And he showed such extraordinary kindness to me during the interview segment. I don't remember his question, or a word I said, but I remember that while I felt like the proverbial deer caught in the headlights Andy intentionally extended reassurance and empathy to me. I still remember the words he wrote in my yearbook. Farewell, friend.

Very sad to hear this about Andy.  He lived down the street from me all the while growing up in Afton Village.  I have some very funny memories of some of Andy's antics - he had a sense of fun and imagination that I have yet to see matched, like the time he, I, and three girl classmates (whose names escape me now) went downtown posing as Foreign Exchange students from different countries.  Naturally, Andy was from Germany; none of us spoke English the whole time.  Somehow nobody caught on!  Either that, or people were being kind.  We also double dated several times and it was always a lot of laughs.  RIP, old friend.

Denny, your comment really brought Andy back to me. I've seen the German foreign exchange student routine; it was one of his best. He was so much fun to be around, and such a supportive debate partner. I'm sure he was a great teacher. There's a picture of Andy and me as debaters on my profile page.

Here's another of Andy and me going to the prom. I'm barely recognizable under the hairdo, but Andy is his suave, sophisticated self.
