In Memory

Walter Byrd

Walter Allen Byrd, born on August 15, 1951 in Phoenixville, PA, passed away on November 29, 2013.  His mother, Daria Anna Byrd precedes him in death.  He is survived by his wife Paula Byrd, father W.C. "Bill" Byrd and wife Suzi, daughters Stacy Legge and her husband Stu, and Cassie Byrd, his sister Daira Byrd-Shearer and husband Bill, and nephew Kirk.

Walter attended the University of Texas for a couple of years before starting his family.  He worked summers for a neighbor and learned the craft of woodworking and cabinetry.  He later worked for his uncle for many years before starting his own custom cabinet and trim business.

Walter loved to play cards, bowl, and spend time with his family and friends.  He was an active member of the Cypress United Methodist Church.

Walter was my first boyfriend...the first person I ever went "steady" with.  It was our Sophomore year at SBHS and we always doubled with Bill Standard and Barbara Stanley since Bill had a car.

The few memories that really stand out to me are: 1) the night he asked me to go steady, 2) going to the Twirp Dance and the fun Barbara and I had making the corsages for the boys; 3) buying look alike shirts to wear when we went out (the fad at the time); and 4) going all the way to South Main to play putt putt.

We broke up after that year, but remained friendly.  In our senior year, when I needed a date for the Bruin Brigade Formal, Walter went with me.  We had a good time doubling with John Ball and Carolyn Elsberry.  Just 4 friends out for the night.

After I went to college, I only saw him a couple of times at the class reunions...but I always think of him fondly.  Sadly he is gone far too soon.
